چکیده

Abstract. The impact of soil moisture initial conditions on the mean climate over West Africa was examined using latest version regional model International Centre for Theoretical Physics (RegCM4) at a 25 km horizontal resolution. reanalysis European Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 20th century (ERA-20C) used to initialize control experiment, while its minimum and maximum values entire domain were establish respective dry wet (hereafter referred as experiments, respectively). For control, an ensemble five runs from June September performed. In each we analyzed two idealized simulations most sensitive conditions. precipitation in is linear Central Sahel regions, where (wet) experiments lead rainfall decrease (increase). strongest increase found with change value approximately 40 %, whereas Sahel, peak −4 %. sensitivity can persist 3–4 months (90–120 d) depending region. However, influence no longer than 1 month (between 15 30 d). temperature located −1.5 ∘C Guinea coast around 0.6 ∘C. A significant surface energy fluxes noted: (dry) cooling (warming) associated (increase) sensible heat flux, (decrease) latent flux boundary layer depth. Part 2 this study (Koné et al., 2022) investigates extremes.

Simulating the Influence of Greenhouse Gases on the Climate of West Africa

The response of climate to perturbations in GHGs is location dependent. Six experiments: control (CTRL); double CH4; double CO2; double N2O; halved CFC11 and halved CFC12 were carried out to reveal the local area response to different GHGs levels in the atmosphere over West Africa. Double CH4, CO2 and N2O generally induce wetness but they also induce localized dryness at the hilly and mountaino...

Tropospheric NO2 concentrations over West Africa are influenced by climate zone and soil moisture variability

The annual cycles of soil moisture and NO2 have been analysed across the climate zones of West Africa using two satellite data sets (OMI on AURA and ASCAT on MetOp-A). Exploring the sources and sinks for NO2 it is clear that the densely populated urban cities including Lagos and Abuja had the highest mean NO2 concentrations (>1.8 × 10 15 molecules cm -2 ) indicative of the anthropogenic urban e...

The Influence of Soil Moisture Upon the Geothermal Climate Signal

Estimates of regional climate warming over the past few hundred years are being obtained from profiles of borehole temperature versus depth. The two assumptions in recovering mean annual Surface Air Temperature (SAT) are that the relationship between the Ground Surface Temperature (GST) and the temperature-depth profile is purely conductive, and that SAT is uniquely coupled to GST. While these ...
